What is Accreditation?

Accreditation is a core function of PMCQ. Accreditation is a quality assurance process which is undertaken to ensure that interns are receive appropriate education and training through their internship and are able to obtain general registration with the Medical Board of Australia (MBA).

All facilities that employ interns, including hospitals and GP clinics, are required to undergo accreditation for intern training. A survey team, comprised of a Team Coordinator and trained Surveyors, will consider at the facility as a whole, and at the individual units which interns will work in (e.g. medicine, surgery, emergency, mental health) against Accreditation Standards to ensure that interns have adequate access to education and training, appropriate supervision, orientation to each unit they work in and assessment throughout their intern year. The survey team also consider other aspects such as facility governance, infrastructure and medical education personnel to ensure that interns are adequately supported throughout their internship year.

Accreditation status recommendations arise from the survey process, are considered and endorsed by the PMCQ Accreditation Committee and provided to the Queensland Board of the Medical Board of Australia (QBMBA). Accreditation recommendations are considered by the QBMBA in their determination to grant accreditation status to intern training facilities and their respective units.

Accreditation is a supportive quality improvement process. Survey recommendations are devised to assist a facility to achieve improvement in their Intern Education and Training Program and to meet Accreditation Standards.

Detailed information about the purpose, process and forms for the different types of accreditation surveys are available on its respective link.

PMCQ also provides guides to assist facilities with accreditation, including preparation for surveys.
